Yawn! Getting enough of sleep?

Do you find it hard to fall asleep at night? The lack of sleep at night can have a negative effect on our health, relationships and career. Besides Insomnia, how many other sleeping problems are you aware of? Do you know any one who has difficulty in catching a few Z’s? Here are some of the types of problems that are known to affect people all over the world.

  1. Insomnia: The most common form of sleeplessness, insomnia suffers have either trouble falling asleep or even if they do, they can’t sleep long enough to reenergize themselves. Some insomniacs even though when they sleep for 7-8 hours, don’t feel refreshed when they wake up.

  2. Sleep Apnea: Sleep Apnea is the difficulty in breathing during sleep. A person suffering from Obstructive Apnea may find himself choking for air while asleep. This is because of the congestion in the throat. Another type of Apnea is the result of a delay in the signal from the brain and is called central Apnea. Apnea is considered dangerous and hence the patient must visit a specialist. If left undiagnosed, it can lead to heart attacks, strokes, impotence, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure and heart disease. 

  3. Periodic Limb Movements in Sleep (PLMS): PMLS is actually a discomfort in the legs during sleep which causes jerks or movements while asleep. This not only disturbs the victim himself but also his bed partner. These kinds of movements can occur once every 20 to 40 seconds.

  4.  Narcolepsy: Narcoleptics suffer from this strong urge to sleep no matter how long their sleeping hours are. Those who suffer from narcolepsy can fall asleep almost anywhere and at anytime like while at work, while taking and even while driving. These “sleep attacks” can last anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 minutes. A sufferer may even experience a temporary loss of muscle control during such an attack.
