Big men need to style too

-Arati Gurung

There are as many big men as there are big women. The reason we might not notice them could be because men don’t bother much about fashion the way women do. Add to that the style insecurity of a heavy man who’s subconscious compels him to choose colors that blend him into the background, and what we are left with is almost no big men at all.

Not that I’m complaining. My only motive to write this piece is to encourage big or round or heavy men not to spend the rest of their lives never ever realizing that they could have looked striking handsome, if only they would have chosen better dressing. So what if you’re a little wider than most people, it doesn’t mean you can’t look attractive. Just pay heed to some important fashion tips and you’ll soon be on your way.

First and foremost – throw away all those extra large baggy clothing! If you think they help hide your beer bellies then wake up, the only thing they can hide is your pride. The truth is baggy clothing actually makes you look bigger than you probably are. A loose appearance will add the appearance of weight. But that is not to imply you run after tight fitting clothes, fashion experts advise your clothing to fit comfortably with no more than an inch of space at any given point – that’s the trick.

Another misconception is that stripes make you look slim. If you’re an ‘okay’ size, vertical stripes do help in the appearance, but if you’re over the okay size then stripes are your worst enemy. Don’t even go to horizontal ones!

Color is the most important aspect in dressing to look slimmer than you actually are. Dark colors-black, chocolate brown, charcoal, navy blue, and dark gray-offer a more slimming look.

When in suits, make sure your suit jacket and shirt are similar in color. It’s important to do so because contrasting shades draw attention to the point in which they meet, creating a line at the point that gives off the appearance of bulk. Look for two-button suit jackets in dark colors, they create a sleek look that makes your waist and stomach look tidy.

What about prints, you ask? Yes, large patterns give a bulky appearance so stick to small vertical patterns that make the torso appear longer and slimmer. With patterns always rely on vertical patterns and never horizontal patterns.

A big tip for the big people – never buy items with huge buttons and zippers, whoever gave you the idea that they compliment your size is wrong! Choose small, narrow fasteners.

Another point to always keep in mind is to steer clear of shiny satins, rayon’s as they only add weight. Any fabric with a bright polish will only make you appear larger than you are.

If you have a chubby, round face, do not purchase turtlenecks. Turtlenecks can make you look heavy in the neck area. Instead, choose shirts with v-necks or leave the top couple of buttons on a dress shirt undone so that there is an angle that slims the face and neck.

Stay true to these basic rules and watch how clothes can shed off the pounds and add on the confidence.
